At some point in your adult life you must have felt and noticed the hard and thick layer of skin on your feet appearing more often on your toes called corns. They grow due to frequent pressure on your toe skin. It is also said to develop when your skin tries to protect itself from friction. It has been observed that women tend to suffer corns more than men. TYPES OF CORNS: Corns can be soft, hard or seed.

Soft corns are typically found by the sides of the toes due to the soft tissues and the moisture in-between the toes which keep the corns soft. They often appear whitish or grey with a soft rubber texture.

Seed corns are small hardened patches that form under the feet.

SYMPTOMS: How do you know that you have corns? When you feel pain around your toes when wearing your shoes; when your feet skin feel sensitive to touch; when your feet skin is hard and lumpy, you probably have corns.

CAUSES OF CORNS: The major culprit is wearing wrong and tight fitted shoes; walking or standing for long may cause your shoes to rub against your skin thereby causing corns. TREATMENT: This involves removing the built up dead skin. You can use the following methods to remove the corns:

File down the corns. To do this, first soak your feet in warm water with Epsom salt. After the soak, pat your feet dry with a clean towel and moisturize with a hydrating lotion or cocoa butter. Continue this process daily until your corn has softened, then gently rub the corn with a pumice stone. If the corn is between your toes, use an emery board, also known as a nail file, to rub them. Repeat these steps until your corns have disappeared, which may take a few weeks ( You must ensure not to over file the toes so you do not expose the toes to more irritation.
